When this happens, a microchip can greatly increase the chance of the animal being identified and safely reunited with its family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice, which is placed under an animal\u2019s skin. It contains a unique identification number that can be read using a special scanner. If a lost or injured pet is taken to a vet, animal shelter, or rescue centre, staff can scan the animal to see whether it has a microchip. The identification number can then be used to find the owner\u2019s contact details on a microchip database.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Microchipping is particularly important for animal rescue organisations. Rescue centres often care for animals that have been found wandering alone or have been abandoned. Without identification, staff may have no way of knowing where an animal came from or who its owner is. This can mean that pets spend weeks, months, or sometimes even longer in shelters while staff try to find their families.
